Also, I forgot: To make a floating, compact search box like on the demo, just create another search instance for that, set it up for the compact layout, and place it to the footer via a widget – it’s possibly the fastest and most reliable way.
This way the first search instance will be used in the menu, and the other as the sidebar floating search.
