If you are trying to create a front-end filter based on the taxonomy term portfolio categories, then this documentation should help you with it.

I would like the search to only focus on a certain category of portfolios. For example, I have an “Agency” category. I would like there to be only “Agency” portfolios in the search results.
Oh, okay – no problem, you can do that by including results from a specific taxonomy term 🙂
