When clicking the “x” icon to clear a search, the results list is empty. I have tbe “Display results by default when the page loads (auto populate)” enabled. So, the user expects to see the same default list when the search criteria is cleared. How can that be accomplished?

That I’m afraid is not possible. I have tried a few custom coded variations to maybe somehow “hack” it to make it work, but unfortunately this needs to be fully implemented to work (as the auto populate can’t be re-triggered through a custom script).
However I have taken it as a feature request, it sounds really good, makes sense if someone wanted to have the original results back. I will likely add an option to turn this on/off too. It is very likely to be added in the upcoming release, I’m 99% sure.
