Buddypress group checkbox search: is this possible. We woud like the search the same way as it does with categories and tags with the groups – but we see that isnt like that. Can you guys charge to customize that?

Unfortunately it is not possible, BuddyPress groups are stored differently as categories indeed.

This cannot be done even with tagging Groups?

Unfortunately tagging won’t help.
The best possible option is probably looking for a freelance developer on http://studio.envato.com/ or other freelance site.
