Clicking outside makes results disappear

If you click anywhere on the page other than the search and results, the results and images disappear: Such as clicking on the large banner image or white space to the left and right:

Great, my client had one more request that I couldn’t find. When the page first loads the Search field has a black circle with an “X”, can that be removed until after a user does a search?
