Ik have my checkboxes in taxonomy display mode default as “unchecked“, but they show all as default checked!.

Thank you very much for the details, it helps a lot!
The problem is, that the categories in the filter are individually selected, and in that case the individualy checkbox statuses are appled.
If you plan to use all the categories, you can just use the Use all from category option (that case the global option applies), or otherwise uncheck all the checkboxes from the selected categories.I hope this helps!
