it’s ok, i’ve managed to do it, but in Appearance/Customize/Additional CSS, rather than the Ajax CSS section.

all the items are linked to categories. I’m also getting an issue where there are only 2 showing up when all the checkboxes are ticked, or if i’ve ticked 2 options (and i know there are 4 posts in these in total), i’m only getting 2 results.

hmm, what i really want is the normal looking isotopic layout (i.e. rows of 3 or 4), but the actual posts to look like the horizontal examples (with the image at the top, text underneath). is this possible?
